ROLE PLAY GUIDE

Why would I want to role play at all?

To experience something without real life limitations. In the real world, the 18th century has passed, natural disasters infrequent, and identity fixed (for the most part). Role play is a well established principle of education, psychotherapy, self-exploration, and entertainment. We pretend to remove those limitations when simulating an experience.

ROLE PLAY TIPS

1 - In Character versus Out Of Character

In character (IC) describes how we act through the eyes, ears, and body of our role play character. Physical actions and conversation is conducted as if you are the character, through  emoting and conversing with others who are also IC.

Out-of-character (OOC) describes your own responses and interactions with others as your real self. You can use OOC minimally when need for situations where you perhaps need to leave your computer to use the bathroom. In this situation you would type something like: ((BRB - potty break)) - using double parenthesis to indicate the OOC chat.

2 - Emoting

Emoting is the essence of Role Play. Good emoting describes and guides those of whom you are interacting with.

A good example of emoting:

Adrian Wise cracks the barrel and slides the shells in, slamming the barrel shut .. "I'll SHOW YOU!"

A not-so-good example of emoting:

Sam Unwise thinks you should just all be quiet, but keeps his mouth shut.

3 - A fair exchange

To get the best from your time in Role Play, relax and be flexible with the storyline. Sometimes, this means allowing other characters to take the upper hand. But this is a good thing, because it can create the beginnings of a multi-chapter story when it comes to the old west!

4 - The rules of surrender

An area that is often misunderstood. Consider how you and others might react in a real life scenario to things like guns shooting nearby or a knife being flashed in your direction and base your Role Play response on that.

Good example: (When someone threatens to shoot you)

Posey Narker hoists his hands high in the air, not wanting to be shot “Jist don’t shoot me Deputy!”

Bad example:

Miffy Art ignores the silly gun

Miffy Art ((I’m not going to role play with people who use guns violently))
